Gen. Joshua Blackwood Howell

            Brigadier General Joshua Blackwood Howell was born on September 11, 1806 in “Fancy Hill” now West Deptford , New Jersey. 

During the Civil War he commanded the 1^st Brigade, 1^st Division, 10^th Army Corps.  He died from injuries received before 

Petersburg Va.   On Sept. 14, 1864 while in temporary command of the 3^rd Division of the 10^th Corps.  General Howell was the 10^th  

child of Colonel Joshua Ladd Howell and Anna Blackwood Howell.  His father commanded the 2^nd Regiment of New Jersey Troops during 

the war of 1812.  His Grandfather Colonel John Ladd Howell was a commissary of the Revolutionary Army.    For some years prior to the 

Civil War, Joshua Howell held the rank of Brigadier General of the State Militia.  He was married twice and had several children but only 3  

survived to adulthood.  His first wife was Mary Lewis.  They were married on April 7, 1831 and she died September 7, 1852.  His second 

wife was Catherine Whitely; they were married October 15, 1854.  Joshua Howell entered the Union Army commissioned as Colonel of the 

85^th Pennsylvania volunteers on November 12, 1861 and was commissioned Brigadier General of Volunteers on September 12, 1864 only 2 

days before his death.   General Howell died when his horse fell on him.  In his honor, Maj. General John G. Foster ordered the new fort recently 

erected at Mitchellville to be named as “ Fort Howell ”.  His body arrived in Woodbury NJ on September 19, 1864 and was first interred in 

the Presbyterian Cemetery in Woodbury but was later removed to Eglington Cemetery .
