Gen. Joshua Blackwood Howell

Gen. Howell Post 31 GAR
Brigadier General Joshua Blackwood Howell was born on September 11, 1806
in “Fancy Hill” now West
During the Civil War he commanded the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 10th Army Corps. He died from injuries received before
Petersburg
child of Colonel Joshua Ladd Howell and Anna Blackwood Howell. His father commanded the 2nd Regiment of New Jersey Troops during
the war of 1812. His Grandfather Colonel John Ladd Howell was a commissary of the Revolutionary Army. For some years prior to the
Civil War, Joshua Howell held the rank of Brigadier General of the State Militia. He was married twice and had several children but only 3
survived to adulthood. His first wife was Mary Lewis. They were married on April 7, 1831 and she died September 7, 1852. His second
wife was Catherine Whitely; they were married October 15, 1854. Joshua Howell entered the Union Army commissioned as Colonel of the
85th
days before his death. General Howell died when his horse fell on him. In his honor, Maj. General John G. Foster ordered the new fort recently
erected at
Mitchellville to
be named as “
the
Memorial Services Program for the
dedication of the
CW/GAR memorial in front of the old city hall in
Woodbury, NJ.
