*As a member of the Long Branch James
B. Morris Post #46, you list a James Campbell and that he was Post
Commander in 1903 & 1904, but no other information. He was my
great-grandfather; more data is listed below.
DOB: 9-18-1843 in Lincroft, NJ - DOD: 5-30-1915 in Long Branch, NJ
Service: Enlisted on 9-3-1862 for nine months with Co. E, 29th NJ
Volunteers. They mustered in at Camp Vredenberg, on Monmouth Battlefield,
near Freehold and left for Washington on 9-28-1862 with 39 officers and 860 men
under the command of Capt. Joseph P. Lake, Lt. William Cook, and 2nd Lt. George
Vanderhoof. They reached Washington on the 30th and encamped on East Capitol
Hill. On Oct. 5, they moved to Tennallytown where they constructed Forts
Mansfield and Reno. Leaving there on Nov. 30, they proceeded 80 miles down
the Potomac shore to Liverpool Point and crossed to Aquia, VA and
did picket duty on the Aquia Creek and Fredrickburg R.R. They saw action
at Falmouth, Fredrickburg, Belle Plain, again at Fredrickburg and then at
Chancellorsville plus some intervening engagements. When his enlistment
expired he returned to Freehold and was mustered out on June 28, 1863.
After visiting home he re-enlisted in the Quartermaster Dept. as a farrier and
was sent to City Point near Washington where he served until the close of the
war. I don't know the dates of his second enlistment.
He helped organize the Barbara Fritchie Post #11, G.A.R., New York City, in 1876
and became Commander in 1881. He served as Delegate to the National
Convention almost every year from 1880- 1890. He moved to Long Branch in
1890/91 and sometime after that must have joined the Morris Post, and as you
have listed, was Post Commander in 1903 & 1904.
I believe he is buried in West Long Branch Cemetery; I will try to confirm that
for you.
Sincerely,
James B. Campbell - Easton, MD
